3D Portfolio- Clay Masks

Project Type

Photography

Date

August 2021-2022

This portfolio is based on the idea of expressing different cultures conveying that through these clay masks. Masks are regarded in specific culture that is tied to their religion, spiritual meaning, animals, ancestors, or gods, and convey life, and death. For example, the Japanese use masks in Noh theater, an ancient dance drama in a show don't tell way of acting. They utilize the masks to depict characters with various meanings to contribute to the overall meaning of the story. But I want to develop these themes, ideas, and meanings of the masks to exaggerate the overall meaning of what the mask represents. My piece “splattered blood of Jealousy” is based on the “Hannya” mask. In Noh's theater, this represents a female who was once human but was overcome by feelings of jealousy becoming a demoness. But in this piece, I used red acrylic paint and splattered it all over the mask to represent blood implying the violent tendencies of the hannya’s jealousy, and part of the mask is broken to represent the feeling of brokenness within the Hannya. As again the goal of this portfolio is to represent the culture in each mask and accentuate the overall meaning within the mask.
